Toro Personal Pace Lawnmower Review

If you are thinking of buying a new lawnmower this year, take a look at the Toro Recycler Personal Pace lawnmowers.  I bought one in 2004 and have been very happy with the personal pace drive system.

Standard Drive Systems

On most other lawnmowers, you squeeze a control lever on the handlebar which engages the power drive.  There are a few problems with this.  First, the more you squeeze the lever, the faster the mower goes.  You have to be pretty gentle on the control if you just want it to inch forward.  Secondly, when the drive engages, it tends to force you to squeeze the lever harder which makes the mower go faster.  This can sometimes cause the mower to get out of control, essentially pulling you around the yard.

How the Personal Pace Drive System Works

Toro created an ingenious drive mechanism for their self-propelled lawnmowers. In the Toro Personal Pace drive system, the control for applying the drive is part of the handle and the whole handle is on a sliding shaft.  So, as you hold the handle and push the lawnmower, the handle slides into the shaft and engages the drive at just the speed you are walking.  This method works very well.

The drive system makes the mower very eas to control around shrubs, trees, and in tight spaces.  If you need to get closer to an item in your yard, just nudge the handle a little and the mower will inch forward.

Other Features

The Toro Personal Pace mowers are available at various price points, offering different engine configurations and wheel sizes.  In general, all of the mowers offer mulching, side discharge, and bagging capabilities.  Some models provide a built-in cleaning feature where you connect your garden hose and can wash the underside of grass buildup without having to tip the mower on its side.

Conclusion

The Personal Pace system on the Toro lawnmowers makes mowing a lot more enjoyable and Toro’s mowers provide all the standard features other brands do.  Their prices are no higher than other major brands.  As with any power lawnmower, the Toro mowers are susceptible to normal wear and tear, but not any more than other brands I have owned.  When you are considering a new mower, the Toro Personal Pace mowers are worth a serious look.
